Ingredients
3 cups whole milk
2 cups Mac & Cheese Shredded Cheese
3 cups (12oz) pasta (penne, ziti, macaroni, etc.)
5 ½ tablespoons butter
2 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon flour
1/2 cup bread crumbs
1 small yellow onion, finely diced (optional)
Directions
  1. Preheat oven to 425°F.
  2. Cook pasta according to package.
  3. Meanwhile, in a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt 5 Tbsp of butter with salt (reserve remaining ½ Tbsp of butter). (If using onions, sauté them in the butter until translucent.)
  4. Add flour to butter (and onions if using) and whisk until smooth.
  5. Slowly add milk ½ cup at a time, whisking smooth after each addition. Bring to a simmer and add entire package of shredded cheese. Stir until smooth. Drain pasta and add it to the cheese sauce.
  6. Transfer to a buttered 8 x 8” casserole dish.
  7. Melt remaining ½ Tbsp of butter and stir into breadcrumbs. Sprinkle buttered breadcrumbs over the top of the mac and cheese.
  8. Bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown on top. Serve hot.
