Cub Foods Environmental Philosophy
At Cub Foods, we have a responsibility to minimize our environmental footprint and are committed to honoring our pledge as environmental stewards. All of our business units and operations teams consistently work to identify and support business initiatives that are environmentally-friendly, ranging from promoting customer involvement in the company's recycling programs to further reducing energy usage in our stores and offices.
What Cub has been doing to help the environment
- Cub Foods cares about the environment. Our stores have been involved in plastic bag recycling since 2004. More than 1 million lbs. of plastic bags are recycled through this program each year.
- All Cub stores also participate in a fresh food "rescue program," collecting perishable items that would otherwise be wasted, and donating them to local food shelves.
- Cub has joined forces with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's GreenChill Advanced Refrigeration Partnership. This program promotes green technologies, strategies and practices that protect the ozone layer and reduce greenhouse gases. By signing the GreenChill Partnership pledge, Cub Foods has expanded its environmental stewardship efforts by using only non-ozone-depleting refrigerants in all refrigerated cases, reducing the store's carbon footprint. For more information on the GreenChill program, visit the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Web Site.
Cub Foods Phalen store will be Cub's first LEED construction project
- The Cub Foods Phalen store is being built on the East side of St. Paul, an area that presents opportunities for redevelopment and revitalization. Currently, the area is underserved, and Cub Foods hopes to set an example for other companies considering development opportunities in East St. Paul.
- Cub Phalen is pursuing LEED certification and it is striving for Gold. Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), LEED is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings.
- If we achieve Gold status, the Phalen Cub Foods will become the nation's first new grocery store to successfully achieve LEED Gold certification.
Cub Phalen LEED Features:
- 44 skylights that will illuminate 75% of regularly occupied spaces using a solar powered GPS system that tracks and redirects sunlight as needed. These skylights are expected to save 14% of the store's energy.
- The parking lot will be the first commercial lot in Minnesota to be illuminated using only LED lights; lights only need replacing ? on average ? every 40 years. These lights are expected to provide an energy savings of 50%.
- Polished concrete as the store's flooring will eliminate the use of floor wax and stripping chemicals thus reducing the amount of chemicals that are hazardous to the environment.
- A landscape irrigation system that uses 50% less water than "typical" systems.
- 75% of the building construction waste will not end up in landfills. Instead, it will be recycled and turned into other useful materials.
- Building materials are made up of a minimum of 20% recycled or recyclable material.
- The store will feature men's and women's locker rooms to encourage associates to bike, walk or snow shoe to work.
- Twin Cities Metro Transit is adding a new bus route to the store. Once open, there will be two bus routes that will include the Phalen store on their regular routes.
- The store will offer expanded parking for fuel-efficient vehicles and bicycles.
- Energy modeling of the building systems during the design process allowed the store to be designed with energy savings of more than 18% compared to conventional supermarkets.
