Make a Valentine Tree

Start a new tradition with this easy-to-make centerpiece
Fresh flowers are a classic gesture of love, but if you want to take it a step further we have just the project for you: a Valentine Tree.
This unique centerpiece will dress up your dinner table and provide little bites of something sweet for dessert. Best of all, almost all the materials come from the supermarket shelves.
The base of the tree is a cluster of roses in a shallow vase, surrounding a “tree” of flexible branches. You can also have fun with red ribbon and hang Hershey’s Kisses “ornaments,” Scrabble letters spelling “LOVE,” tiny photos and rolled-up love notes on the branches…just let your creativity loose!
You’ll need a wide-mouth, shallow vase for the roses and a tall, sturdy champagne glass for the branches. Trim a dozen pink or red roses so they fit snugly against the edge of the shallow vase (a pavé effect). Put your champagne glass inside the vase with some water. Anchor the base with marbles if necessary. Choose flexible branch filler, such as pussy willow (if available) or baby eucalyptus, and place in the glass. Trim just enough so each branch bends a little at the top. (Another way to do this is by using florist’s foam. Place enough inside the vase, omitting the champagne glass, to secure rose stems and branches.)
Using thin red curling ribbon, tie a short piece onto the white tag of a Hershey’s Kisses candy. Then tie the other end onto the branch, about 3 or 4 inches down from the tip. Curl the excess ribbon. Repeat the process with more candy and other objects on your tree. Vary the lengths of your ribbons for a more natural look.
